What are Emotion Cards?
The E-motion Cards were designed and created to give children a solid emotional grounding they can use as a tool for the rest of their lives. These emotion cards are a platform for teaching understanding, and recognition of emotions in themselves and others – suitable for parents, teachers, counsellors and carers.
There are 2 sets of 21 cards in your emotion cards. One set of large cards and another of smaller cards that sit inside the large cards when matched. The cards are targeted at two groups of children – 5-7, and 8-11 years old. They are colour coded for each age group and also colour coded for each emotion.
The large cards have “prompt” questions about each emotion. eg. What happens to you when you feel angry? This can get the child talking about what happens inside of them when they experience a particular emotion. Does your tummy scrunch up? Does your head feel hot? What’s going on inside of you? etc.
The next question asks what type of situations can cause them to feel that emotion. Ask for a situation that might have already happened. If it’s still happening even better. Emotions are “energy in motion” – a constant cycle of moving energy. And we can control our emotions by the way we think and consequently behave. By encouraging children to talk about their feelings, we can show them how to express their emotions more effectively, rather than in a destructive way.
The last prompt on the larger card is usually: “show me that feeling.” This is done by the child choosing one of the smaller photo cards that show the emotion. The smaller card then sits inside the large card with matching photo.
Once matched, the other side of the smaller photo card offers possible solutions for handling their emotions. Over time, as the child is more comfortable with using the cards, they will remember some of these solutions without going back to them. And so, we are developing Emotional Literacy in our children.
There is a booklet accompanying the emotion cards, written to assist parents, teachers, carers, and those working with children to have a better understanding of the emotions themselves.
These emotion cards are a great resource for parents who are wanting to build healthy family relationships, and to help their child express their emotions in a way that others can respond to more readily. In schools, they are being used as an emotional literacy resource for teaching children how to understand the words that stand for each emotion, and how to respond to these emotions in themselves and others. They are a fantastic parent /teacher and life coach/counsellor resource: children are able to understand, and develop a solid emotional grounding that they can use for the rest of their lives.
E-motion Cards are aligned with the Personal And Social Capabilities of the National Curriculum for the Australian Schools.
